Giving new life to an old object sometimes means not restoring it but instead just re-purposing it for a similar task. This old treadle sewing machine base, made by Domestic, underwent one such re-purposing. The original top was too far damaged to try to restore. Of the six possible drawers, only four have survived with one them in very bad condition. The sturdy metal base was cleaned, lightly sanded, primed, and painted “hammered black metal” (actual name of the color). A “new” wooden top was chosen. It was part of a desk of my daughter’s and is a nice muted purple color. I painted some quarter-round molding the same hammered color as the base for the edge of the top. Now it’s ready to be put to use in my sewing space for my sewing machine.
